Origins of Bluetooth



1997

Jim Kardach deveoloped a system where mobile phones could communciate with computers. He came up with the name Bluetooth for the company as he was reading a book at the time about vikings and King Harald Bluetooth. He felt that it was a catchy name and it stuck.


2000

First chip to integrate radio frequency, baseband, microprocessor functions and Bluetooth wireless software is made. Also the first mobile phone with Bluetooth is brought to the market.


2001-2003

Intergrated different types of equipment into Bluetooth. This includes printers, keyboard-mouse combos, laptops, and mp3 players.


2006

Bluetooth is installed in 1 billion devices worldwide. Also, shipments are being made at 10 million per week.


2009

Finally in its gaining popularity, Bluetooth became a low energy wireless technology while maintaining higher connecting speeds than ever before. This is from the additions of Bluetooth Specification Version 3.0 and 4.0.


And the rest is history!
